The need for enhanced awareness

If ever there is one department in a school that needs to ensure that everyone else knows what it is up to, it is Special Needs.

And this, for two reasons.  First, most if not all of the pupils and students that are helped by the Special Needs team will be engaging with other teachers in the school, and it is vital that the needs of these young people are fully understood.

Second, it is important that everyone understands the enormous growth in the range of special needs that schools are dealing with.

Making others aware

Of course it is not up to those of us who created Special Needs Week in the first place to tell anyone what to do.  All we can do is make information available and hope that it is helpful.

But we do get a very real sense that making others in the school aware that special needs is not just about two or three well-known needs, but rather is about dealing with a huge range of issues, many of which were unknown or unexplored just a few years ago.

How this can be done, and of course whether it is done at all, is up to each school.  It might be through the circulation of a leaflet or through letting everyone know about this website.

Or it could be through a presentation on a CPD day.  Or you might have another approach.

Do your own Special Needs Week.

Or, as our title suggests, you could arrange a week during the course of which the work of your department becomes the focus of the school through making available information to parents and fellow teachers, through arranging presentations on school notice boards, through undertaking an assembly, through having colleagues work with pupils and students in tutorial time on the issues raised by special needs.

There are of course many other ways of doing this, but overall our view is that spreading the knowledge of what the Special Needs Department of a school does throughout the school is vital.

I do hope you find that this website is helpful to you.  And I hope that if you feel there is something missing, you will tell me.

Or better still you will help me put it right, by writing an article which can be added to this site.
